Math Work Zones

In math, we usually have a problem of the day, a short mini lesson, then time to apply what we have learned.  Often, you will find children paired up playing a game and then we visit our math work   zones.  At the end of math time, children are given time to reflect and share their thinking.

In math, we have been learning about numbers. We are learning how to represent a number in a variety of ways.  Children are given a "problem of the day."  They solve their problem in their notebooks and are given opportunities to share their answer.  We are looking for math vocabulary and are looking to see if children can explain their thinking.

We introduced the words:  more, less, fewer, most, and least.  We broke the children into groups and rolled a die.  Who has the most dots?

We reviewed numbers, 0 to 5 and children were introduced to a five-frame.  Children had fun playing five-frame concentration with a partner.

Children are consistently working in groups.  The students were to  roll a die, then color that many squares on their chart.  Who has the most squares covered?
