Our Promises to One Another
We started the week out by having the children come up with their own promises (rules) for each other. Having the children write their own promises helps establish a community of learners who work together better than a dictated list of rules. In a child's mind, rule can be broken, but a promise must be kept! As the children came up with a list of promises, we wrote them down on a circle. After agreeing to their promises, they were issued a clothespin with their name on it which is then clipped to the outside edge of the circle. If someone breaks a promise, they are asked to move their clip from our "Circle of Respect" to "Oh no, Hippo." Children earn back their spot in the circle by demonstrating to their classmates that they can follow the formally broken promise.
