Building a Classroom Community

This week, we have been creating a classroom environment where children feel safe and loved. If children know that they are loved, then they are willing to try. When they feel safe, they are willing to make mistakes. So this first week, we have been teaching the children how to talk to one another, listen to each other, help each other and we are learning how to be a friend.  Below are just a few highlights of the week.

We graphed how we felt the first day of school.

Then we read, First Day Jitters

We made a magical juice called "Jitter Juice" to make any nervous "butterflies" go away.
We decorated our cups before drinking it up!

Yum!

What's in the mystery box?  Why it's Mr. Potato Head.  The smartest toy in town.  Why?  He has all of the necessary body parts to be a great listener!

We read books about a boy named David by David Shannon.  While we read these funny books, we listed and discusssed the things David should of done.

We read stories that talked about how we are alike and different.

We sorted pictures of ourselves by many attributes.

We broke up into groups of two and talked about how we are alike and different.

We  made "Me" Dolls.
